Blakes Road Stormwater Project: Protecting the Kaputone Stream

At Taggart, we take pride in looking back at past projects that have made a real difference to our communities. One of these is the Blakes Road Stormwater project, completed in 2021, where we were tasked with protecting the Kaputone Stream in Belfast.

The challenge was clear: surrounding developments were contributing to increased stormwater run-off and pollution, which posed a risk to the local environment. Our role was to deliver practical and sustainable stormwater management solutions that would reduce these impacts and meet all consent requirements.

To achieve this, our team constructed a range of stormwater infrastructure. This included the installation of large concrete pipework, the building of headwalls, and a series of minor earthworks to support water diversion. Each element was carefully planned to redirect stormwater away from the stream and reduce the potential for contamination. We also proactively monitored weather conditions throughout construction, ensuring there were no surprises that could compromise progress or safety.

However, simply diverting excess water was not enough. Managing the quality of the stormwater being released was equally important. To address this, we introduced a single floating decant system, essentially a filtration method designed to control water volume and significantly reduce sediment within the basin. This innovative approach provided an added layer of environmental protection.

Through collaboration with contractors and consultants, and by combining practical construction expertise with a strong environmental focus, the project successfully reduced the impact of stormwater on the Kaputone Stream. The result was a system that not only met consent conditions but also helped protect a valuable local waterway.
